Ball bearings are rolling element bearings that use steel balls to separate the inner and outer races. That separation reduces friction between a rotating shaft and its housing. The balls roll, the races stay aligned, and the movement stays smooth.
There are two kinds of friction: sliding and rolling. Sliding friction happens when two surfaces scrape against each other, and heat builds fast, and wear follows.
